Just Thinking Out Loud
After playing a few songs on stage, Calcium arrived and did something that I suspect was very "Calcium." He explained that a complaint had been received from a patron of a previous show in the tour, suggesting that he was accompanied by recorded music, which somehow diminished the patron's experience. Anyway, he took a moment to say this before showcasing his loop pedal. I knew he was known for mixing on the fly and being a mad rapper, but I had very little experience with what that skill looks like live. Therefore, I was twice as impressed with his musicianship live, especially knowing that some patron had viewed it as a shortcut or trick. He's still making needless explanations, particularly the way he really goes for it in the performance. There was no intermission; he performed solo for two solid hours, like a magician, folks.
I hoped for more explanation of the newest album's songs, yet like writing poetry, those inspirations can become mixed, and listener interpretations can alter. Furthermore, Calcium's more of a musician than a speaker. I obsessively listened to his X album to acquaint myself with the range of his current offerings, and I was not disappointed by the way he gave everything an expanded energy in performing live.
I bought my seats early and secured the very best available to be close-in. The visual effects on his image on the screens were cool at the beginning, but I suspect they were more in homage to the Hollywood Bowl's festival heritage than to Calcium himself.
Arriving in Hollywood around 4:30 pm, I took the Hollywood & Highland shuttle at 6:30, allowing my companion and me some shopping time. It was a surprise that their buses did not have a working chair lift or an elevator to the mall's Orange plaza. I chose not to rely on the Metro Park and Ride buses, which were scheduled far too late on a weeknight to arrive on time at The Bowl.
